The criteria for cochlear implant candidacy in children is expanding. Children with profound sensorineural hearing loss who demonstrate little or no benefit from hearing aids were within the first group to be considered candidates for cochlear implants. Cochlear implant centers and some parents have questioned whether children who previously were not considered for cochlear implantation might develop more advanced speech and auditory skills with a cochlear implant than with hearing aids. This group includes children who demonstrate auditory and speech progress with their hearing aids as well as children who are older than what is considered to be the optimal age for implantation.
