Greetings from Minnesota. This is Special Interest Group (SIG) 9 Co-Coordinator, Doug Sladen, writing in place of Tami. I'm contributing this month's column in hopes of giving SIG 9 readers a chance to learn more about me. This is the abbreviated version with just the highlights. First, I'm Canadian, though have been in the states for 20 years. My first job was a Pediatric Audiologist at the Bill Wilkerson Center, and that remains my passion. I left the workforce in 2001 to get a PhD, and since completion I've worked as Assistant Professor at UT Austin, and now as Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. My current position is part administrative and clinical and the rest research. My research interests include auditory development of children with cochlear implants and, most recently, the benefits of “clear speech” among implanted adults and children with cochlear implants. When not working I'm learning to play the guitar and am trying my hand at gardening. My home life includes two dogs—Benny the weiner dog and Bingo the Rottweiler/Bassett (both rescue dogs)—and my partner Steve, whom I married this summer.
